Large Web Site Migration Checklist

How do you even get started in your planning for a large Web Site migration?  Of course, you want to have strong Web Strategy, Web Governance, and Web Team in place. Probably another useful step is to just get a feel for the overall scope of a migration, before diving into any particular details (or just starting without planning).  Perhaps this one page checklist will help your planning by providing some ideas of the scope of migration planning (click to see larger image appropriate for viewing/printing):

Some key take-aways here are that: a) it isn't just about the technology (but executive sponsorship, resource needs, and financial support needs to be secured), b) it's impossible to fully anticipate issues so pilot, c) communications and creating a compelling vision (internally and externally) is necessary, especially to help get you through the inevitable hiccups, and d) track migration progress, preferably automatically versus manual self-reporting, based on metrics defined prior to the migration.  Also see the previous post Five Suggestions for a Successful CMS Migration

As always, your comments would be appreciated.
